"I wake up
at 4am every morning. After a cup of coffee, I set off on my first round to feed the stray dogs and cats near my home. Most of the time, I will be done by about 8am for a little breakfast at home.
Come 11am, I set off on my daily errands to pick up some bread and foodstuff for both my stray dogs and cats and the needy people I meet along the way. It takes me about 2 hours to go to those few places before I head home again.
Before 3pm, I've to get all the food ready for my second feeding route, this time further from home. With the numerous strays along this route, I will only be done about 7plus.
Usually I do not have dinner that early cos I set off soon again for the final feeding route on another nearby area. Depending on whether there are emergencies or unexpected incidents, I will be home about 10plus or some days close to midnight. By then, I would be too tired for anything more than a late dinner and much needed sleep.
The next day, I will be up at 4am again. "
Picture this. Then picture this as your common day for the past 35 years. You've just met Auntie V. And this is just an excerpt of her daily life.
We dedicate Project JK to this woman of sheer determination and perserverence in her commitment to our strays.
Past 60 odd years, she tirelessly devotes her days to our many strays out there - out of sight and out of mind of urban folks - those who hear 'dogs' and think of yappy, furry creatures behind glass panels in the overly numerous air-conditioned petshops dotting our tiny island.
Dogs to V are the loyal, beautiful strays who have greeted her for the past 35 years as she comes without fail with food and friendly pats, the only human touch they may have for their entire life. Dogs whom she has seen birthed and die - by natural causes or culled by the authorities in the name of animal control.
Any wandering dog is termed a stray and in certain books, a stray has no right to live.
Having met these wandering fellows and walked with them for awhile, I beg to differ.
